So you received your iPhone, and you'd like to share your first impressions with the rest of us? Well, this page is for you then. Here is what I had to say about mine. Obviously, I liked it enough to make sure that all participants to the conference would get one. Let's see what you have to say about yours...

I've had mine for a little while and I love it. There are a few things it's missing (copy/cut & paste, MMS, etc.) but in terms of the browser, it's the best I've ever used. The fact that it's mobile only makes it better.

Also, the applications that conference attendees will be using are looking really great. Don Campbell, our Platform Evangelist previews them in this blog post.

I'm enjoying the iPhone. My wife has serious envy. She's getting my hand-me-down Samsung Blackjack. That said, after a weekend with it, I have to say it's very addicting. The interface and speed is so elegant, I don't miss the crackberry style phones at all. The camera is nice, the native YouTube and Google Maps applications are great. Best of all, setting up service took 5 minutes and another 5 to update the firmware. I had an existing AT&T account, so transferring was instant over iTunes — even faster than going into the store probably. I was also impressed at how well it synced with Outlook.

Tapping out messages takes a little getting use to, but I'm impressed by the accuracy of the touchscreen. "Paging" on the iPhone is smooth and natural. I love the pinch and spread zooming. Nothing to clutter the screen. I'm curious to see how it handles documents.

Some minor annoyances are the lack of Adobe Flash support in Safari, customizing ring tones (how did they leave that out and who thinks a dog barking is a good ring tone?), and lack of existing applications, but I'm sure those will be remedied in time over the course of what looks like will be a long, long life for iPhone. Any software designers out there could learn a lot about the focus on simplicity of the user experience. I hope it starts a revolution.

This is by far the best swag ever! Thanks, Ismael.

After a couple of days, I’m finding it to be simultaneously one of the coolest and most frustrating devices I’ve ever played with. However, I am determined to write my full review on the iPhone’s Notes pad, so it’s taking a little longer...

As a speaker coming from overseas, I have a few problems that I really want solutions to:

  • I have to wait until I get to the conference to get my iPhone. Which I'm happy to do, but you know, technolust and all...
  • There's no point activating with AT&T as I don't live in the US and global roaming is expensive
  • I will have to find a solution once I return to Australia

Make no mistake, I still want the device, but it will probably end up as a wireless web browsing iPod, at least for a few weeks until I can determine the best solution.

I have the same question/concern. I am from Canada. Not a speaker, just an attendee that is about to register.

Thanks

Got it and posted my first impressions of it on my blog. In brief, I love the interface, the handfeel, and the general ease of use.

Problems I have encountered:

  • Known issue with taking photos with the iPhone camera and then syncing in Windows XP/Vista. When you do this, Windows bluescreens. The fix using iPhone 1.0.2 is to delete the pictures and resync — looking forward to a real fix.
  • If you turn the autolock off, the screen stays on all the time, leading to very short battery life.
  • Web browsing with Safari still has some issues as noted in other folks' posts (Flash support being a big one).
  • Having problems getting GMail to work correctly without using the straight web interface.

That said, I was able to install some unsupported applications on it, using iBrickr and app installer (Google 'em yerself — if you brick your iPhone, Apple probably won't help you). I have added a voice recorder, NES (Nintendo!) emulator, and a couple of other video games on it, and they work reasonably well; I will be reskinning the iPhone to use my own icons as soon as I either find some I like, or have the time to make them.

What I'm really interested in, from Ismael and others, is what they have in mind for all of us iPhone-enabled attendees and speakers. I mean, yes, we can do IM, twitter, blogging, etc. to some extent, but why? After all, I can do those with my Opera-enabled Nintendo DS as well, but I don't plan on doing that except to show I can geek with the best of 'em. There's got to be some other stuff planned for the conference — any hints? Anything we should make sure we have on/enabled/installed?

Jesse,

You can find a preview there.

Please feel free to suggest others creative uses for the iPhone during the conference. This is all a big experiment, and we are all both lab workers and guinea pigs for it.

Best regards

Hi Ismael,

Thanks for the pointer — and I should note that there's a lot of interesting stuff on Etelos' blog as well at.

There are a ton of interesting applications either iPhone-native or being reworked for the iPhone — most of them, though, are web-based and therefore require either EDGE or WiFi access to play with. And I know that's kind of the point, both of the iPhone and of Office 2.0.

While I expect that attendees will have one or the other (or both) at the conference venue itself, I'm also interested in the possibilities of doing things offline and then syncing when the network becomes available. For most of these applications, including at least Etelos' as currently described, this will be an issue. All of the things that Danny describes doing in getting on a plane, using Etelos' CRM application, stop as soon as the plane's door closes.

Not sure how to get around this just yet without some major hackery, and I don't think it'll be officially solved until Apple releases a supported mechanism for uploading applications, but there it is. I might try to track down some Mac-native applications and see if I can't hack them to work on the iPhone — and happy to let y'all know the results.

The other immediate concern I have is taking pictures, tagging them, and then syncing and having Windows bluescreen. But that's a burden all of us Windows users must bear.

Received mine on Friday and replaced my Cingular 8525 (HTC). I miss the slide out thumb keyboard of the 8525 a bit. Definitely much faster to type with two thumbs than to hunt and peck with one (or two) fingers on an on-screen keyboard. That said, I'm suitably impressed with the auto-correction built in and my big fingers are less of a problem than I expected after a few days of use.

The zoom in/out through pinch/spread works extremely efficiently. After browsing on my phone, I find myself wanting to reach out to touch the screen of my laptop. An incredible ease of use bonus. The user interface is much snappier than the 8525, and the of course, beautiful to look at.

A few glitches:

  • I use an Ubuntu laptop and have to borrow my wife's MacBook to sync, but I figure it's only a matter of time until someone builds an open source or "over the air" sync tool.
  • Would really like to have either over the air sync capability to GoogleCalendar (a la GooSync) or a native Google Calendar application (like the map application) — preferably the later.
  • From a hardware standpoint, I'm finding the automatic screen reorientation to be hit or miss. Not sure what's up with it, but it doesn't always turn or has a delay at times.
  • And the biggest annoyance: the software keyboard doesn't seem to work with WYSIWYG web-based productivity tools (e.g. Zoho), thus severely limiting productivity (by the way, this did work with Opera mobile on the 8525).

Got the iPhone today. Just fiddling with all the tools and getting to know my way around. So far, so good. No comment on the battery yet.

What has impressed me the most thus far is the signup and transfer process, which was the most seamless I've ever experienced. Here's a play by play:

4:30 pm: Opened the box and plugged iPhone into my Macbook.

4:45 pm: Dead Time — joined a 30 minute conference call and tried to ignore the new gadget on my desk.

5:15 pm: Began signup process, which was completely online through the iTunes interface. This was very slick but more importantly, very simple. Like most Apple products, it just WORKS.

5:20pm: Called AT&T thinking surely I must speak to a person to activate this phone. The polite rep directed me back to the site to complete the process on my own time. All the options were clearly laid out and very simple. There weren't too many overlapping plans to choose from — they each differed by about $20 in price, which was fine with me. Anything in the $5 to $10 difference range would have been too confusing. Don't underestimate this point: when was the last time you bought a toothbrush in a grocery store? Too many choices leave me totally overwhelmed, pissed off, and impatient — that never happened here.

5:21pm: Re-started signup process. There were about 5 steps and most of the data was pre-populated since I was logged in as an iTunes user. Again, easy easy easy. The most complicated part was finding and entering my account number and password from Sprint.

5:35 pm: Mas or Menos, signup is finished. I get a welcome email saying the phone would work for outgoing calls immediately and could receive inbound calls later.

5:36 pm: Placed first outbound call successfully

6:15 pm: At grocery store (not shopping for toothbrushes) I received a call from AT&T that I had entered either the Sprint account number or password incorrectly. She conferenced me in with my assistant at work who looked up the correct number and supplied it to her.

This is the crazy part...

6:28 pm: Ended call with AT&T where the rep told me my phone would be working in 2 MINUTES. I was very impressed by this. My realistic expectations, since i was dealing with a huge telco, was the next morning. Bear in mind that at this point, it's all AT&T, not Apple.

6:35 pm: I leave the grocery store and get back in my car where my new iPhone has two voicemails waiting for me. Very impressive.

Now it's several hours later and I'm looking for stuff I can't find, such as the setting where you switch the phone on its side and the keyboard stretches out. I'm sure this will all come in good time but for now, I can't find it.

I am from India. I would like to have an iPhone, but decided to choose PS3, as the iPhone would not work in India with other service providers and AT&T roaming is expensive. Do you have a solution for this?

I would love to have an iPhone!
